John “The Razor” Phan has been declared to have won the Card Player and BLUFF Magazine 2008 Player of the Year after a wild line of successes which included winning two WSOP bracelets, one World Poker Tour title and in excess of $2 million in prize money.
The 2008 Player of the Year race was one of the closest ever. Fellow pro player David Pham had another amazing year, as he finished 2nd in the Card Player competition and 3rd in the BLUFF Magazine standings. Pham won the Card Player 2007 Player of the Year award and nearly became the first player ever to take home back-to-back titles if he won this year
2008 was deffinitely John Phan’s year. Phan’s winning streak through the summer was one of the most impressive runs in poker tournament’s history. Phan won his first WSOP bracelet in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold ‘em event, taking in excess of $430K in prize money. Right after this big win he took a 2nd bracelet in the $2,500 Deuce-to-Seven Triple Draw Lowball event just a week later. Phan also had his first WPT win at the Legends of Poker that took place in August and in which he won over $1 million in prize money.
Other victories for Phan during 2008 included two additional WPT final tables, when he finished in 6th place at the Bay 101 Shooting Star event and took 5th place at the Bellagio Cup IV. Phan finnished 2008 with 14 cashes and now holds over $5 million in tournament earnings during his career.
