Tom McEvoy was one of 20 former main event championship to participate in the WSOP Champions Invitational.
When Grand Rapids native Tom McEvoy won the World Series of Poker main event in 1983, he outlasted just 107 other players. McEvoy’s latest WSOP victory didn’t earn him a bracelet, but it should give him equal satisfaction.
McEvoy won the inaugural WSOP Champions Invitational on Tuesday, an event in which every past living main event champion was invited to participate. McEvoy outlasted 19 other players and defeated 2002 main event champion Robert Varkonyi to cap off a nine-hour final table.
The final table also included Dan Harrington, Jim Bechtel, Carlos Mortensen, Huck Seed, Berry Johnston, Doyle Brunson and Phil Hellmuth.
For the win, McEvoy received the Binion Cup from Jack Binion himself and a 1970 red Corvette. McEvoy, an author of more than 15 poker books, has 37 career WSOP cashes and four bracelets, including his main event title.
