Full Tilt Poker has published that British boxer Audley Harrison has signed a sponsorship deal to represent it over the Internet and at a number of land-based tournaments.
Thirty-eight-year-old Harrison is the current European heavyweight boxing champion and is scheduled to face fellow Londoner David Haye in Manchester next month for the World Boxing Association’s title.
The Englishman revealed that the sponsorship deal arose after a chance meeting with Eddie Hearn from promoter Matchroom Sport while both were playing in the main event of last year’s World Series Of Poker. After discussions, the Olympic gold medallist agreed to enter Matchroom Sport’s Prizefighter Heavyweights III tournament being held at London’s ExCeL in October of that year, which he went on to win before claiming the European title with a dramatic final round knockout of Michael Sprott.
“I fell in love with poker while living in Las Vegas and have spent time learning how to play the game from the professionals who reside there,” said Harrison.
“I have had some great results already in the game and Eddie and I have been looking at joining the right team for a while now. We have found the perfect partner in Full Tilt Poker and I look forward to representing it both in the ring and on the tables. Next time I’m in action on the felt, I plan to have the World Boxing Association’s heavyweight championship belt round my waist.”
Harrison and is currently training in California ahead of November’s meeting but takes poker very seriously with a pair of cashes at the World Series Of Poker to his name alongside a runner’s-up finish at the Bellagio Cup and a third place ending at June’s Venetian Deep Stack.
